The song was written by Rodrigo, Annie Clark, and music producer Dan Nigro. Rodrigo included it on the set list of her ongoing Guts World Tour.

Background

After the commercial success of her debut studio album, Sour (2021), Olivia Rodrigo continued collaborating with Dan Nigro, who had produced all of the tracks on it. The follow-up album, Guts (2023), was conceived when she was aged 19, a year that she described as "lots of confusion, mistakes, awkwardness and good old-fashioned teen angst". The album and its title were announced on June 26, 2023, and its lead single, "Vampire", was released four days later. The song reached number one in various countries, including the United States, where it became her third number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. "Bad Idea Right?" was chosen as the follow-up single.

Rodrigo wrote "Obsessed" with Annie Clark and Nigro. On July 31, 2023, Rodrigo revealed a video clip which included clues about Guts' tracklist, intended for fans to decode. It featured her relaxing in a bedroom, unpacking boxes, and experimenting with various devices, including an electric keyboard and a retro typewriter. Along with three other songs, "Obsessed" was initially only made available on vinyl editions of the album. After it became the only one of those to be included on the set list of her ongoing concert tour, the Guts World Tour, she subsequently announced it as a single. "Obsessed" was released on March 22, 2024.

Composition

NME's Kyann-Sian Williams described "Obsessed" as a pop rock song, which "sees Rodrigo singing about becoming fixated on a partner's ex": "If I told you how much I think about her / You'd think I was in love."

Critical reception

"Obsessed" received a positive review from Variety's Chris Willman, who wrote: "'Obsessed' certainly is of a piece with the record's more uptempo tracks. [...] 'Obsessed' is the banger of the four (and also, conveniently, the one that was already tagged onto the vast majority of LP variations, so it's no obscurity at this point)."

Promotion

In March 2024, Rodrigo's fans noticed that a snippet of "Obsessed" played on her hotline, depicting her harmonizing with herself while singing the lyrics "Da, da-da-da, da-da-da" before screaming with increasing intensity.

Music video

Mitch Ryan directed the music video for "Obsessed", which was released on March 22, 2024.

In the music video, Rodrigo finds herself in a hotel ballroom area filled with competitive pageant queens who have dated the same guy with whom Rodrigo is in love. Among the inscriptions on the women's sashes are titles such as "Miss Thought She Was the One", "Miss Also Thought She Was the One", "Miss 2 Summers Ago", "Miss Mom's Favorite", and "Miss Still His 'Closest Friend'". As she enters a crowded banquet hall in a black dress, nearly two dozen women are sitting around the tables, each with their superlatives.
